Autumn in the Tetons, 2008
The last week in September is one of the finest times of the year to visit Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The drama of the imposing Teton Range is somehow elevated to another level, as nearly every color of the spectrum can be found splashed across the landscape. Photographers and sightseers are provided a dizzying array of scenic and photographic opportunities. After spending a week exploring Teton country in the fall for the very first time, I now understand why countless photographers make the annual pilgrimage to this autumn "Mecca".
A majority of my time was spent roaming the roadways of the national park ... with equal time devoted to both hot spots and lesser known places. And despite the beauty of the Park, one of the highlights of my trip was discovering the wealth of amazing scenery along the various national forest routes just outside the park boundaries. Visits to the Gros Ventre area and the forest roads of Shadow Mountain were two such highlights.
Despite the fact that I spent more time exploring than actually shooting, I enjoyed myself immensely. I found ways to get around the "not quite there" color conditions and the extremely bland weather. I spent countless hours making photographs ... and many more hours just watching the landscape. I even had the pleasure of spending time with some photographer friends who were visiting the area. The collective experience is an autumn tradition that I look forward to each year. The photos that follow are my favorite images from the national parks (including Yellowstone) and national forests of Teton Country. Enjoy.
