6: The Understory

Next Chapter : Diversion

The common definition of “understory” refers to the vegetation that grows at the lowest levels under the forest canopy.  I like to infuse a little more meaning into the word, especially within the context of autumn. When I look beyond the obvious glories of prolific autumn forests, I find other stories that are lesser known. I find beauty in the understory.

When the last of the light of day seeps out of the forest, a fleeting vibrancy emerges against the shadows. The autumn colors on the forest floor soak up this temporary light, and for a heartbeat, the understory takes center stage. There is an inspiring brilliance in these moments. Drops of water become beacons of light. The understory outshines everything else for the briefest moment, and if I am lucky, I catch it before it fades forever.
